We will be holding a training day to introduce folks to the lovely area of Harrison Bay State Park. More details to come, but here are some basics:

We'll have some experienced racers available from 9-11am to answer all kinds of questions you may have. We'll have maps of the park so you can run and bike around. and if Jim Farmer returns from the Overmountain Extreme this weekend, he'll be giving a navigation clinic as well. We're hoping to have a few canoes on hand, but that is TBD!

Since we will be providing maps, an rsvp would be appreciated:

would this be open to anyone who is not doing the race. What would you need gear wise (other than a compass) for the navigation part

I'm not sure what Cathi has in mind for the race, but I will do a nav clinic/training for anybody that wants it. So, at least my part, will be available to everyone.

Cathi,
Can I show up with my team earlier than 9? I have to leave early and I really want to bond with my teammates. I think Jim made it back from OME, but he is not awake yet Wink

I will get the team together to come up on the 29th. Is a roster available yet? I am curious as to how many teams you expect.

Looking forward to it.

Roughly... We will be there from 9-11am, but you are welcome to hang out as long as you want!

It will be mostly a do what you want and we'll point you in the right direction sort of thing. Jim will lead a nav clinic towards the beginning, to teach you the basics of reading a map, using a compass, and following a bearing. We'll have maps to give you so after you can head out on your own and practice your newfound knowledge. We'll have at least 2 canoes on hand so you can get out there and practice a bit. Depending on the demand for them, we may limit your time in the boats so that everyone that wants to get in can. (And if we need to do a separate nav clinic for early paddlers, I can certainly arrange that). If you have a kayak you'd like to bring to explore more, you are definitely welcome!

Since we will be providing maps, an rsvp would be appreciated:

looking at the website for the park I noticed there is no mention of mountain bike trails/riding. Where will you be doing that part of the race at. Can we ride that day as I need all the help I can get.

Since my kayak hasn't gotten wet in a few yrs I may bring it also. Just hope no wasp or bird nest has been built in it Shocked

Looking forward to the beginner navigation class. Will that get into using a UTM (I think that is what it is called)

Where will you meet at Saturday morning? I may drive down Friday since I would have to leave way early Sat morning to get there by 9:00AM

Right now I am 90% sure I will be there.

Nice singletrack trails. Nothing too technical, but fun.

Cathi and I are talking about me having a classroom clinic on Friday night where we can spend more time on the basics. Sounds like you want us to save a seat for you Wink
