Amen on that John - Props to the guys who got maps day-of... I don't know how you managed it! We spent three hours combing the instructions, plotting and scheming on Friday which atleast gave us some breathing room when the changes started rolling out race day.

Only issue that came up was the fact that the chance to ask questions was after the gear drops! We were pretty much stuck with our strategy minus the leg1 PFD change.

I've always wondered if some teams intentionally go through the race packet too quickly so they can play the ignorance/confused card if busted on a ruleing...

hell, I heard one guy at Gear Drop #2 (pine log) say.. I'm just gonna leave this north map here in the bin...

cummon now... just hearing that kind of stuff drives me crazy...

Great reviews everyone! I decided to try my first event solo, and also my first event navigating. Not neccessarily the best combination! Especially when I only got three hours with the map, since we arrived on Saturday morning! Eeek!

Had a great time chatting with Bill and Neal in the beginning of the race out on the roads. Felt a little bad because Neal seemed like he wanted to talk more, but needed the air for other purposes Laughing

I followed along with Enduraventure for the first few sections of trail, but grew increasingly disturbed that we were going way north on the east side of the stream. I decided to try to bushwack west and get across it before it got too deep. I think Enduraventure made the same decision at about the same time. Managed to get across on some rocks, but only after falling into a deep section of water, and scrambling through lots of briars. Meanwhile Lisa safely lead her team away...should have stuck with you guys!! Oops!

Got back up front after alot of running and passing teams. Of course I got busy talking with people and didn't notice as a couple of the top teams snuck away (Lisa's ninja bushwacking skills most likely). After hitting CP1 I decided to try to follow some trails that I believed would keep me out of the "no go" zone. I ended up running into a housing development, and quickly realized that I was in the wrong place. So I backtracked nearly to CP1 to get myself back on the official course. Then I stuck to the shore and proceeded with a long, uncomfortable, and very lonely trek to CP2 and on to the transition.

Sometime during that trek I decided that solo racing is really freaking hard! Not physically, but it's just mentally tough. No jokes, no sharing water or food, no help with the map. Ug. I was not having fun.

Got to the TA, feeling rather dejected, and proceeded to have a really nice paddle. That water and sky were just amazing. Got to The transition to the hike, and decided I just didn't want to complete another trek alone, so I brought it on in to CP6 and called it a day.

Thanks to all the teams out there who tried to cheer me up! Next time I'm bringing along a team to keep me company!!

Mad props to all the solos who finished it. I've got a new respect for you!

Mark

I've got to say, this was a huge mess-up. With this race, I don't think they should have even given us this option. There's no way I would have picked them up day-of had I know the complexity of the course. Especially because of two factors: 1) unsported gear drops, 2) pre-race meeting AFTER the gear drops. I ony had 3 hours with the maps and instructions before having to leave to go drop off gear. Then of course if you realized you made a mistake in your gear choice, there is no way to fix it since everything is miles away. Arg.

I thought the first trek would be on trails and roads nearly the whole way, and so I anticipated a MUCH faster (mostly running) section. I only realized the mistake on the bus when Johnny looked at my map and said, "You can't go there." Oh crap. It was too late to change...

I only had brought one small water bottle, planning on filling it up once or twice on the way at stream crossings. Great way to save weight right? Anyway, I ended up going 3 hours without water and food due to that mix-up. Sigh. (probably contributed to my bummed out mental state!)

Hmmm...make fun of your elders at your peril, you young whippersnapper you! Smile

As I've said before...I've got more of a diesel then a turbo under the hood plus I am currently hauling a heavy a$$ load (literally) or I was really just taking my sweet time "warming up"...Rolling Eyes Actually, I am surprized I left you any O2 to breath...maybe that was your issue... I think I sucked a few small birds right out of the sky Wink

FYI, I only had 1/2 a water bottle & no food for that section but Bo was kind enough to carry the bottle for me...I think you made an OK call, you just had to be a bit better with the nav.

So did Bill tell you to run up and chat with me?... knowing trying to "speak and run" is currently well beyond me...that clever ol' b@stard! Evil or Very Mad

Anyway...It was good to run with you and sorry if we led you astray at the start...kind of...Twisted Evil Good for you to realize we we screwing up and then finding your own way.

You are obviously a friend of Hunter's...your a bit cocky Smile and BLOODY fit/fast! Smile I can understand you not liking solo racing...I'll solo adventure trips but MUCH prefer to race with a team.

Cheers,
Neal

Haha, good at going fast, but in the wrong direction. Yeah, Hunter and I have made a specialty out of this!!! Laughing Now throw in a good navigator and it's another story! Where's Peter when you need him?

Congrats on the win Neal!

Thank you Toby for the race. I know it wasn't all smooth, but it wasn't because you weren't trying.

I think this race is a great value and it is close to home for me. Keep them coming.

This was my first 24-hour race and my second solo race. I was a little concerned about racing solo in the August heat -- on top of being over-weight and under-trained Smile -- but I finished under the time limit without experiencing dehydration, bonking, heat stroke, serious injury, or death. So, overall I'm satisfied with the outcome.

Special thanks to Bill Pflueger for letting me borrow a kayak.

And man didn't that ice cold water taste fine? After running out of fluid for the last 3 or so hours, we drank about 2 gallons each on the way home. Those who never do this kind of crazy stuff CANNOT appreciate the little pleasures in life.

Absolutely Norma!..."little" pleasures like air conditioning Wink & that ice water was bloody AWESOME! Great to see you guys ...& FYI, I am sure Linda just "imagined" seeing me in drag in Blueridge a few weeks back Smile
