Ah. Thanks Neal.
That is very good to know about CP B. I honestly feel better that it was somewhat misplaced. I realize the 100 meter ruling would still require more of a search on my part, but when I had gone back and forth enough over that terrain I didn't care to travel to yet another reentrant when I knew for sure I was at the area I was looking for. This brings closure to it. I didn't like to doubt something I felt 100% sure about. CP A I was less confident about because I hadn't referred to the park map and didn't realize there was an extra gravel road there until I physically came across it. I thought I had the right spot and still don't understand what went wrong there, but because I was clueless for an alternative I moved on to CP B and that's the one I really should have found. _________________ John Wellens |

Fun race, loved the swimming and paddling. Big hats off to Toby for perseverance when it seemed like the whole world was against letting the race happen. (CoE, storm, blackout, roadblocks, etc.)

Your word of caution about driving at night is not falling on deaf ears. That's a scary story from your past. I told my girlfriend about my experience and she vowed to be there next time. If not, I'm going to sleep first for sure. The weird thing was that I didn't feel the slightest bit drowsy until I started driving. I was physically drained, no doubt, but it hit me hard and very suddenly. It was worse than the effects of alcohol which I do not ever drive with.
When it started hitting me I was already on Hwy 20 with nowhere to really turn off the road. I was only able to drive about 40 mph while the people behind me wanted to go 60. I just wasn't alert enough for the curves. The road wasn't wide enough to pull over, at least not from what I remember. And when I'd see a turnoff for some new residential development area it would come and go so quick that I didn't have time to brake with the people tailing me so close behind. It was like a bad amusement park ride where you start getting sick 1/4 of the way through and you know they won't stop it just for you. _________________ John Wellens |

Good to see that even superman felt that way

THIS is why I love AR!!! you just don't hear these kinds of stories from triathletes... from them you get the "dood, I shaved 15 seconds off T-2 in that race.. I rocked it"
and Neal, you're absolutely right (although you told the story in a funny way) we did much better driving home sunday than we did at the '07 GRAR... that one scared me.. (woke up a couple times and wasn't sure whether I was at a light, moving, or standing still) but this year we all took the same vehicle to/from the race - and we talked about the race the entire way home... _________________ I'm Crappin' you NEGATIVE... |

Hey John,
So, you were the real tall dude going solo up to CP 12 with Basic Inner Rash, Black Dome, Hairy Scary and us (Secret Squirrels)? I apologize for not saying "howdy." I was too busy looking at all those squiggly lines on the map. Next time I'll be more social.

if you haven't seen it, a small magazine "Endurance" (not sure about the distribution range) had an article in it just recently about sleep and compared no sleep for 22 hours to 4 straight shots of whiskey...
if that's the case, I'm still hungover... especially in my feet. |

Heck, I recognized you without the stench. Don't worry I wasn't wanting to bother any minds at work while we were all baking away in the sunlit fields. Claire didn't even seem sociable at that point. I don't think any of us were in much of a mood to do anything but get CP 12 and push off. _________________ John Wellens |

In our case we (any racer) didn't sleep for a good 36 hours. I woke up just after 6 am on Sat morning to look over the map again and to start working on strategy. That's 38 hours with no sleep. I didn't push myself nearly as hard physically during Goldrush '07. Plus I do better in the cold than in heat which may have taken a toll also. All I know is that I could drive 4 hours to get home last year and this time I couldn't make it back to the YMCA.
Hey, good to see you again Corbitt. Glad to hear you enjoyed your transition time as much as I did. I'm guessing you never got to use your bed mattress bags to get the bikes over though, ha? _________________ John Wellens |

Hey Paul, where did y'all go after 12? We were all together in that creek, then the rest of us headed towards 13. (On wrong road, I might add). Once we realized our mistake, you were never seen again. You must have found the correct road before we did. My team still wasn't sure so we doubled back to almost 12 to confirm. By then we lost everybody which was a big mistake. We ended up who knows where on Stamp Creek & never did find 13

I'm curious if anyone knows why the WP at Boston Creek and Hwy 20 was added at the last minute.
We knew we couldn't clear the course so the night before we had decided to skip 10 and 11. Of course that got blown up at the race meeting and required a hasty rethink of our strategy. In my mind, the only CP's Toby really thought we would skip in the interest of time were 7,8,9,A,B and the bike CP's. everything else was pretty much in line with the mandatory course.
We got plucked out of the water about 100yds from 9. If we were smart, we would have stalled the boat driver, like Ron did until he reached the island. Then jumped aboard.

Good seeing you too John - Unfortunately we didn't use them, actually put them in the pack and had them at CP22 but the chaffing monster struck Drew pretty good and we decided not to go after A&B... so we just left the bikes there. Going across that lake I was sort of glad too! I'm telling you though, mattress storage bags work great, just duct tape your bike shoes over your pedals (to protect from punching through) and your are golden! (Use the queen size bags and make sure they are the type with NO ventilation holes! doh. 2+ mil atleast) |

"Apparently" is a very fast but illegal route (but not obviously illegal) that you could have taken that would have been much faster then the long swim or coasteer (which was Toby's intention)...the WP was likely added to avoid the awkward post race debate over what was legal/what was intended etc I don't think it was realized that the WP pretty much made those points mandatory although I am not sure if there was another legal route available...sorry Lisa knows this stuff and has the maps...I figure she is busy packing for TransRockies so may be a bit busy
Cheers,

To 13 ... We followed that faint 4x4 road to the left and up the hill. The road quickly dwindled to some single track, then hit an intersection.
We took a left at that intersection to a tiny little creek that I confused to be the branch of Stamp Creek we were looking for. Not finding the CP there (the terrain didn't really match up, which was throwing me off), we doubled back the other way, past the intersection. Realizing that definitely was not right, we turned around again but this time went farther -- ALL THE WAY to the correct creek, where we once again bumped into Hairy Scary and Black Dome and found the CP.
I bet you passed us after our little bauble at the intersection.
At the creek, we split up again. We took the creek toward the road. There was a decent trail most of the way.
Tim on our team punched CP 12 first out of all of us in our large group, so that's why you likely didn't see us walk away. |

Ha... we were on one of those boats, we could taste 9 as well and got to watch Ron from the boat as he made it to the island in the nick of time! We all should've just acted like we were deaf and kept swimming |
