hell... I would have sworn up and down that we were WAY over the total distances that Toby initially released (think it was around 75 miles)...

I didn't digitize only the swim sections of the swim trek so I dunno what those were, specifically, but I'll do it later this afternoon and report back..

Ron looking back you could have talked me into swimming from the point just past CP 2 to the Y. I think at about CP2 I saw lights on the otherside of Little River which looked easier to travel as well but I think this was off limits.

Doesn't take some ruthless coasteering into play either. I was told to take my PFD with me to the meeting so I kept it for the start and used it in some crossings on the first leg. Does anyone else besides me look back at the time/distance and wish they would have brought fins and simply swam Little River to the TA?

I think it would have been a great idea to swim from CP2 to the TA. Originally didn't it say though that we could only swim where the lifeguard was? You would have to be really thinking on your feet to come up with that after a last minute rules change.

Yes but I think that rule was in place because you did not have to have your PFD with you on this section. If you did you could swim all you wanted. What I am not sure of is could you have traveled on the East side of little River if you had your PFD to swim across at the Y.

TOBY?

Honestly, who knows what was legal or advisable in that first section.

Toby did a geat job with the race overall but the last minute changes & rechanges compared to what rules already stated in that first section was a complete goat scr#w. Sorry Toby, you know I love you man! If that change was mandated by Corp., then I apologize but I didn't get that feeling.

We took the written rules to mean that swimming was NOT allowed at all except for the one little piece where lifeguard was. He even stated to cross Little River before you got in 3ft of water which to us meant you wouldn't have PFD so stay out of water. It felt like the original intent was to trek & then all of the sudden, swimmming became an option.

I think most of us made our decisions Friday night or Saturday early based on these rules as given. But then when questions were asked, things kept changing. They did bring us our pfds but ours were already stuffed with a full bladder, food, lights, etc. for the paddle. I wasn't sure all the extra stuff & my pack would get back to my boat so we just stuck with our original plan. I would have loved to have swam across Rose Creek to the Y at minimum. To be honest, we swam so fast with fins & kickboards that swimming from CP2 might have been faster than the night trekking. I'm sure we were moving over 1 mile per hour.

In the end, it made no real difference for us but controversy in the first five minutes was just not the way I wanted to start a race.

& Oh, I mapwheeled our swimming at 3.5ish miles but boy it sure felt longer. Not that that isn't a long way to swim.

Lisa, Chris & I were about the last folks to leave & there was no post race meeting or awards etc just some tasty BBQ abd ice cold water...everybody - racers and volunteers alike were just way too buggered and most racers had to leave shortly after finishing to pick up bikes etc

I believe Toby will be in contact shortly regarding swag & prizes etc...there looked to be some nice gear...not that i looked at it or anything Wink

Cheers,
Neal

And man didn't that ice cold water taste fine? After running out of fluid for the last 3 or so hours, we drank about 2 gallons each on the way home. Those who never do this kind of crazy stuff CANNOT appreciate the little pleasures in life.

This is correct. Someone asked the question specifically at the pre-race meeting. If I had fins I'd have been a swimming fool - instead of a stumbling one.

My only suggestion for the Pine Log Bike leg is to _not_ make bikes mandatory. We walked way more than we rode.

Why is it so hot up there?

I don't know the details but I believe the Corp told Toby right before the race he had to change the course.

This isn't unusual. In ALL of our races we've had verbal approval on the course months before the race, but never signed the permit until day of or day before the race. There always are changes really close to the race starting - some are bigger than others. Usually it is because some local has a concern (valid or not) about where the race is going.

No idea what really happened, but last minute changes/mandates from landowners aren't out of the ordinary.

carried over from the "24 hour nutrition" thread...

who else chose NOT to use the car as a supply station??

(because if that was the case, you'd be carrying all your food for the first +/- 18 hours of the race with you at the start... to carry you through to pine log)

what about the teams that got the maps the day of the race?

I was like 3rd or 4th in line to get our race packet on Friday.. and we were up till almost 12 reading the rules/re-reading the rules (plotting took a lil over an hour)

Dude, I hear ya. They would have been hurting. I left my cooler in my Jeep with a ton of stuff in it. The problem was that I wasn't real hungry when I arrived there. But I at least replenished my pack pockets and forced some calories down. I am normally OK with a little overconsumption if the intensity isn't real high which it never seems to be in an AR. The teams could probably place coolers in each place, but I didn't have that option with only one cooler. I pictured only one main TA like I've seen at other unsupported events in the past.

My water jugs at Pine Log were simmering in the sun. But for energy drink I just left powder in my water bottles and used the cold water from the volunteer tent to mix them up once I got there. That was great.

Jim K and I discussed that several times. We would have been absolutely overwhelmed with the task of preparing everything and getting to the bus on time. I would have been WAY stressed out.
